Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be a UBC member to join a class?
No. We realize that for various reasons people visit churches before they are ready to commit to being a member there. We also realize that you may not be able to attend Bible study classes at a time offered by your church. We welcome anyone who desires to learn the word of God to join our classes.

Is there a basic class for new Christians?
We offer a range of courses for the new to seasoned Christian. We recommend our New Disciples Adult Class which is 4 weeks long and taught on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. on a consistent basis. We also have multi-week New Disciples Class for Youth and Teens (ages 6-17). The Foundations of Christian Living class is a good secondary class to teach someone about the basics of the faith.

 What is Family Night Worship?
Family Night Worship is an abbreviated worship service for all UBC disciples to participate in. We come together collectively before our classes to join in praise and proclamation of the Word. The message is delivered by various UBC Associates in Ministry (and the pastor on occassion). Throughout the year there will also be special emphases such as Lenten and Thanksgiving seasons.

Are all classes open to everyone?
In most cases, yes. However, in some cases a class has a limited capacity or is a closed class to foster greater community building or facilitate the teacher's particular style of instruction. The number limit will be listed on the course announcement.

Is there a cost to take a class?
No. If there is a cost for a course book, it will be indicated in the class description. As a part of worship to God, an offering is taken during the Family Night Worship service, but not in the individual classes.

What if I have to miss a class?
Come to as many classes as you can. We realize that emergencies come up and other commitments. You will get as much out of your bible class as you put in. Infrequent attendance will hamper you getting to know the other members in the class and following the instruction. However, some biblestudy is better than none.

If I didn't come to the last session can I start now?
Yes. We offer different courses (and some continuations) each term. Participants are free to switch classes per term or to come back after a period of being away.

Why do you have to pay for books in some classes?
While the Christian Education department strives to supply materials for most classes, oftentimes when we are piloting a new course we don't can't guage its appeal among the members, or the texts require writing in them, and can't be used again. Therefore we ask participants to subsidize the materials until a decision can be made about ongoing materials and whether this class will become a staple of our offerings.

Can I study the Sunday School curriculum midweek?
Yes you can. We have offered the class "Sunday School on Wednesdays for the past year. It is gaining in its appeal and the curriculum is the same one the Traditional Adult class studies on Sunday morning at 9:30 am.

If I miss a week of the Sunday morning Traditional class can I attend on Wednesdays?
Yes. However you may want to contact the teacher to make sure the same lesson is being covered. The Wednesday class is often a week ahead/behind the Sunday class.
