Dr. Tonya D. Armstrong, Ph.D., M.T.S.
Minister of Congregational Care & Counseling

Tonya D. Armstrong is a native of Durham, North Carolina.  Upon graduating from Yale University, where she double-majored in psychology and music, she matriculated at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  There she earned master's and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology with a focus on child, adolescent, and family issues.  After completing her predoctoral internship in Pediatric Psychology at Duke University Medical Center (DUMC), Dr. Armstrong pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Developmental Epidemiology, also of DUMC. 

Possessing a deeper sense of the psychological and spiritual challenges confronting our youth, Dr. Armstrong obtained a master's degree in Theological Studies (magna cum laude) from Duke Divinity School.  Having garnered clinical and consulting experience in diverse settings such as outpatient clinics, inpatient psychiatric wards, community mental health centers, and group home facilities, she currently serves youth and their families in the community. 

Moreover, Dr. Armstrong serves as Lecturing Fellow in Pastoral Theology with the Institute on Care at the End of Life at Duke Divinity School.  She continues to seek interdisciplinary collaborations for the faithful integration of theology and mental health care, particularly in the development of caring practices for bereaved youth and their families.  In her leisure time, Dr. Armstrong enjoys singing, reading, laughing, and spending time with young people.
