LENTEN SEASON:
The Lenten Season (referred to as "Lent" for short) is the 40-day period leading up to Easter.  Considered one of the most holiest of seasons that Christians can observe, believers across the world make acts of contrition, repentance, fasting, sacrifice, increased study and reflection, etc. as they prepare to remember and celebrate Christ's sacrificial death on their behalf.  This year Lent begins on February 17 - April 4.  Technically this is more than 40 days, but the ancient saints did not count the sundays in their tabulation.

UBC will have available Lenten reading guides and special donation envelopes for disciples.  Also the Wednesday night worship services (7 pm) will have a Lenten focus on the Seven Last Sayings of Christ beginning February 17th

 Walk to Jerusaleum

                                                                           Walk to Jerusalem
                                                               January 24 - April 4, 2010
You are invited to join other UBC disciples as they log their fitness activity for aerobic activity (walking, biking, running, aerobics, swimming, etc) during this 10 week period leading up to Easter. It takes 6515 miles to get to Jerusalem and collectively we will "walk" before and during the Lenten season. You don't have to be a seasoned exerciser, just someone willing to move some (20 minutes of aerobics  = 1 mile).  You get to decide how many miles you will accrue each week.  So how many miles can we count on you to contribute? For more details about this fitness initiative keep reading or register below.
                                                                 What You Need To Know
Cost?:  Walk to Jerusalem is FREE

The Concept: Walk to Jerusalem is a free, 10 week non-competitve physical activity program designed to promote physical and spiritual well-being.  This program begins before Lent and ends at Easter.  The goal is for participants to accumulate enough miles of physical activity to walk from their church to Jerusalem by Easter.  Our route to Jerusalem will be 6515 miles.

How: Each participant will count the miles you walk, run or jog (or other aerobic activity).  You may use a pedometer, use a measured distannce like a track, or use your car odometer to determine the distance.  If you are on an exercise machine you can use the distance monitor on the equipment.  You can determine your miles by counting distance or time, you decide.  For instance, 20 minutes of any aerobic activity = 1 mile.  Keep track of your daily miles to the nearest 1/4 of mile and report them on a weekly basis.

Where: Anywhere! You can do your physical activity in your neighborhood, at a gym, in a school, home, work, etc.

Sign Up: Registration forms are available in the church or you can register on-line on the form below.

Do I have to be in a group?  No you don't.  We have challenged the Sunday school classes, ministries and families to develop their own group of 10.  You might be encouraged to keep your commitment better if you  know the other people who are committed to physical activity with you.  Being in a group does not mean you have to do your physical activity with anyone.  The group leader helps the Parish Nurse Ministry have some extra hands in keeping up with the miles per week and distributing relevant information.

Who can join? ANYONE! Any age, able to record their walking distance or length of time in aerobic activity.

Who do I report my miles to? If you're part of a group, give them to your group leader on Saturday.  We are counting weeks from Sunday - Saturdays.   If you've not been assigned to a group, you can report them on the Individual Mileage Log form on this site.

Will we know how far we've gone?  You will be updated on regular intervals on how many miles have been logged.  Also you will get information about the "stops" on our route to think about.

Is there a prize?  The benefit is to your health for sticking with your plan, and to your soul as you contemplate the meaning of Easter and the significance of the sites we will pass through on our way to Jerusalem.
